JOB SUMMARY:
Clemson University¿s Research, Computing and Data Team is looking for a Computer Systems Engineer to fulfill the following duties:
- The Computer Systems Engineer with specialized knowledge in handling Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) and other regulated data, will ensure compliance with NIST SP 800-171 and Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) Level 2 requirements.
- This role is critical in designing, implementing, and managing secure computing systems and processes to protect sensitive information and meet federal cybersecurity standards.
- Clemson is building an on-premises secure enclave to meet these requirements and the Computer Systems Engineer will have responsibilities supporting the system's system security plan, system configuration management, and change management.
- Reporting to the RCD Executive Director for Infrastructure, the Computer Systems Engineer will be part of the RCD Infrastructure team and will also work closely with:
- (a) research faculty to assess the appropriate solution for their workflow involving CUI;
- (b) university research information security administration
- (c) Clemson's cybersecurity office,
- (d) Clemson's IT Infrastructure and Network Services teams, and
- (e) the RCD Engagement team re: user documentation and support.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
JOB DUTIES:
25% - Essential - Technical Leadership:
Participate in regular security assessments and audits to identify vulnerabilities and non-compliance issues, implementing corrective actions to mitigate risks. Lead change management processes related to CUI systems, ensuring that updates to systems and practices are communicated and implemented effectively. 25% - Essential - System Architecture:
Design and implement IT systems and architectures that are compliant with CMMC Level 2 requirements, focusing on the protection of Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI). Manage and secure Linux and Windows server environments, ensuring systems are hardened against vulnerabilities and are in compliance with NIST-171 and security best practices for handling CUI. Collaborate with CCIT departmental consultants and research security to understand requirements, develop plans, and document solutions to protect CUI and other regulated information hosted within the system¿s security boundary.
20% - Essential - Systems Administration:
Manage all administrator-level work performed in the CUI environment(s), coordinating a cross-organization team comprised of persons from multiple Clemson Computing and Information Technology (CCIT) groups such as: Infrastructure Services and Operations, Network Services, Virtual Desktop Services, Storage and High Performance Computing Services.
20% - Essential - Policy Development:
Serve as a subject matter expert on CUI and CMMC standards, providing guidance and training to IT staff and other stakeholders within the organization. Contribute to development and implementation of policies and procedures for the effective management of CUI, including access control, data encryption, and secure information sharing. Stay abreast of changes in federal cybersecurity regulations and standards, adjusting internal policies and systems to maintain compliance.
10% - Essential - Documentation:
Contribute to documentation of all system assets, configurations, changes, and compliance measures related to CUI and CMMC, maintaining thorough records for audit purposes.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education: Computer Science, Information Technology, Cybersecurity, or a related field.
Work Experience: 5 Years of experience in IT systems engineering, with a strong background in cybersecurity practices and compliance. Experience in business administration, computer science, mathematics, engineering, management information science, networking-telecommunications, and/or data processing.
Relevant experience may be substituted for bachelor's degree on a year-for-year basis.
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:
Preferred Work Experience:
- Experience with Linux and Windows server administration, particularly in configuring and managing secure, compliant systems.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
- Effective communication skills, with the ability to explain complex compliance requirements to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Demonstrated knowledge of CUI handling requirements and CMMC Level 2 certification process. Strong understanding of cybersecurity frameworks, risk management, and compliance
audits.
Preferred Certifications: Relevant certifications (e.g., CISSP, CISM, CompTIA Security+, CMMC Assessor) are highly desirable.

Standard Hrs: 37.5 Hours / Week
COMPENSATION INFORMATION
Expected Salary Range: $ 95,506.00 - $ 153,973.00
Salary is dependent upon several factors including, but not limited to, a candidate's previous experience, knowledge, skills and performance in accordance with Clemson's compensation guidelines.
ESSENTIAL PERSONNEL LEVEL

Required to follow emergency facility closure directives, and not normally expected work on-site during emergency situations.
