JOB SUMMARY:
The Chemist II performs complex chemical analyses and experiments by operating and maintaining laboratory equipment, while ensuring quality control and safety compliance, serves as subject matter expert on instrumentation and procedures (Analytical Specialist). This position specifically contributes to analysis of pesticides and other macromolecules in various samples, utilizing advanced chromatography and spectrometry instrumentation, to support routine and for cause pesticide regulatory inspections and investigations as required by SC law Title 46 Chapter 13 (SC Pesticide Control Act). This position may support other Regulatory Labs as time allows performs other duties as assigned.
JOB DUTIES:
40% - Essential - Sample Analysis, Data Recording, and Reporting:
Receives, organizes, and documents samples, ensuring chain of custody, sample integrity, proper classification, identification, logging in databases, and storage of samples. Prepares laboratory samples for analysis according to established procedures. Conduct analyses to determine specific pesticides. Follows SOPs, uses appropriate methodologies and instrument techniques, including chromatographs and spectrometers to produce legally defensible data. Calculate, record, and verify test results for required reporting purposes, ensuring quality control and safety compliance, and utilizing current computing applications. Experience with chromatography and spectrometry is required.
25% - Essential - Subject Matter Expertise:
Serves as point person for sophisticated instrumentation and development of relevant protocols for novel sample preparation and analysis, and develops, tests, and implements appropriate quality controls for novel protocols. Carefully records new preparation and analysis procedures for appropriate documentation and reproducibility. Provides detailed discussion of procedures and data as needed.
20% - Essential - Lab/Section Maintenance and Improvements:
Performs routine maintenance on instruments as needed, including cleaning, changing parts, and seeking out assistance from more senior lab staff or tech support. Maintain general laboratory workspaces, glassware, and equipment for cleanliness and serviceability. Prepare solutions and reagents used in analytical procedures. Monitor inventory and request required chemicals and consumable supplies. Use appropriate laboratory safety practices and procedures in all activities. Consult with lab manager and/or director promptly for maintenance and as procedures should be updated/developed and equipment installed. Assists with annual maintenance/improvements of facility.
10% - Essential - Professional Development:
Attends annual meetings, when possible, and is involved with the laboratory section on behalf of Clemson University. Participate in other professional development as assigned and available, such as university required trainings, laboratory webinars and seminars, and professional conferences.
Other Departmental Responsibilities: Works with supervisor on other DPR program-related business and inter-laboratory collaborations. This position may support other Regulatory Labs with sample prep and analysis, as time allows Serves on intra- and inter-departmental committees.
5% - Essential - Compliance and Safety:
Follows laboratory quality control procedures in accordance with AAPCO, EPA, and AOAC recommendations. Follows general laboratory safety practices as outlined by OSHA's Laboratory Chemical Hygiene Plan and the university's Occupational and Environmental Safety department. Assists with weekly/monthly/yearly testing of safety equipment in the laboratory.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education - A bachelor's degree in chemistry and experience in a laboratory setting related to the area of employment, including experience in operating and interpreting test results from complex analytical instrumentation such as gas, ion or liquid chromatographs or atomic absorption spectrophotometers; or a bachelor's degree in the natural sciences with academic credits in chemistry and experience in a laboratory setting related to the area of employment, including experience in operating and interpreting test results from complex analytical instrumentation such as gas, ion or liquid chromatographs or atomic absorption spectrophotometers. A doctorate in chemistry may be substituted for the required work experience.
Work Exp 5+ years or graduate degree in related science can substitute for years of experience; previous procedure development experience in chromatography and spectrometry
BS with 5+years of relevant experience, MS with 1year of relevant experience, or PhD with 0 years of experience.
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:
Education - 1st Master's Degree - Chemistry or related field
5+ years in Regulatory laboratory setting; chemistry experience; laboratory-based research and development

Band: 06 Expected Salary ($46,700.00 - $77,300.00)
Salary is dependent upon several factors including, but not limited to, a candidate's previous experience, knowledge, skills and performance in accordance with Clemson's compensation guidelines.
