Clemson, SCOne of the country’s most selective public research universities, Clemson University serves a uniquely driven and highly accomplished student body.
Ranked consistently as one of the best national public university by U.S.News & World Report, Clemson is a science- and engineering-oriented college dedicated to teaching, research and service. Founded in 1889, we remain committed both to world-class research and a high quality of life. In fact, 91 percent of our seniors say they’d pick Clemson again if they had it to do over.
Clemson’s retention and graduation rates rank among the highest in the country for public universities. We’ve been named among the best values by Kiplinger magazine in 2013, and SmartMoney in 2012 ranked us No. 7 in student return on investment.
Our beautiful college campus sits on 1,400 acres in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, along the shores of Hartwell Lake. But we also have research facilities and economic development hubs throughout the state of South Carolina — in Greenville, Greenwood, Columbia and Charleston.
The new Clemson University Harvey S. Peeler Jr. College of Veterinary Medicine (PCVM) is seeking applicants for a full-time position in small animal surgery. This individual will play a pivotal role in the development and implementation of the Clemson DVM curriculum. The primary responsibilities of this position are teaching and service with substantial opportunities for research and scholarship if desired. Additionally, this individual must have a passion for education and a commitment to student success. Academic rank is commensurate with experience.
The Clemson DVM curriculum (https://www.clemson.edu/veterinary-medicine/students/curriculum.html) is based upon integrative, collaborative team teaching where faculty with varying backgrounds can work together to offer students an inclusive and innovative learning environment. The primary role for the small animal surgery faculty will be vertically and horizontally integrated delivery of small animal surgery content in the didactic and laboratory setting. Utilizing state of the art classrooms, laboratories, and teaching technology with both live animals and simulation models, this faculty member will be asked to adopt an integrated educational approach to provide students with a strong foundation of cognitive, clinical, and professional competencies, in preparation for entry into the partially distributive model of clinical training in the fourth year. While the PCVM will not have a specialty referral hospital, we will have a fully staffed community practice as well as a robust shelter medicine / spay-neuter program. The small animal surgery faculty will work closely with the community practice and shelter medicine clinicians to integrate classroom concepts that translate seamlessly into real world experiences. The small animal surgery faculty will not be required to have a service commitment in the community practice. If some clinical service is desired, this is open for discussion with the department chair. Further, scholarly activity (research) is not required for this position but strongly encouraged. Finally, we will consider a hybrid academic appointment for a boarded small animal surgeon. If desired, this individual may seek a combination of a part time academic appointment at the PCVM while also having a part time position in private referral practice. This option can be discussed with the department chair, as needed.
Overview of Clemson and the PCVM
Located in South Carolina’s beautiful and fast-growing Upstate, Clemson University is the land-grant university of South Carolina and ranks among the country’s top 50 national public universities in the U.S. News & World Report. The University has nearly 23,400 students (including nearly 18,600 undergraduates) who can select from 80 undergraduate and 110 graduate degree programs. Clemson employs over 1,150 full-time faculty and has an annual budget expenditure of over $900M. The PCVM is currently seeking accreditation by the American Veterinary Medicine Association-Council on Education to offer the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree to approximately 80 students per cohort starting in 2026 (pending approval). The PCVM plans to utilize a partial distributive model of clinical training for students. Its brand-new state of the art campus will reside in Pendleton, SC, near the T. Ed Garrison Arena, will house research and teaching labs, and utilize both ambulatory services as well as teaching sites at the Clemson University Equine Center, Lamaster Dairy Cattle Center, and other locations for education in the field.
In 2023, the Board of Trustees approved Clemson Elevate, the university’s new strategic plan. Clemson Elevate is built on 3 pillars: deliver the #1 student experience, double research by 2035, and transform lives statewide and beyond. The PCVM was named as a strategic priority for the university, demonstrating the importance of the new college to the future of the university and the state. We are excited to attract a team of top talent as we build the new college.
