This individual will provide visionary leadership and operational oversight for PCVM’s shelter medicine initiatives, including extension programming, clinical instruction, and academic development. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in advancing population health and surgical education through collaborative engagement with regional shelters and rescue organizations.

Reporting to the Department Chair, the Shelter Medicine Faculty member will:

• Leadership & Outreach:

-Provide strategic leadership for PCVM’s Animal Shelter Extension Programs,

-Develop and implement outreach initiatives that promote best practices in shelter medicine and population health

• Clinical Coordination & Animal Welfare:

-Oversee the acquisition, movement, and peri-operative care of shelter animals utilized in the Year-3 Surgery Lab, ensuring compliance with infectious disease protocols and animal welfare standards

-Collaborate with shelter partners to ensure appropriate case selection and transport logistics

• Instruction & Curriculum Development:

-Deliver hands-on surgical instruction in the PCVM Spay/Neuter Program, guiding veterinary students in high-quality, high-volume surgical techniques

-Provide didactic teaching in Shelter Medicine and Population Health, integrating principles of epidemiology, biosecurity, and herd health into the curriculum

• Program Oversight & Mentorship:

-Lead and manage the Shelter Medicine Internship and Residency Programs, including recruitment, training, and evaluation of house officers.

• Service & Scholarship:

-Based upon the time commitments for the activities listed above, the faculty member may have a small percentage of service and scholarship (to be discussed with the department chair)

Additionally, the faculty member must have the ability to:

· Work independently and collaboratively as part of a team, possess exemplary verbal and written communication skills, with exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail

· Prioritize and manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and function independently with limited supervision and guidance

· Work in partnership with faculty and staff across multiple disciplines and functions across the college and university

· Participate in research and scholarship initiatives designed to improve educational and professional outcomes.
