ASSISTANT PROFESSOR - DEPARTMENT OF BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES AND THE EUKARYOTIC PATHOGENS INNOVATION CENTER (EPIC)

Clemson, SC

One of the country’s most selective public research universities, Clemson University serves a uniquely driven and highly accomplished student body.

Ranked consistently as one of the best national public university by  U.S.News & World Report, Clemson is a science- and engineering-oriented college dedicated to teaching, research and service. Founded in 1889, we remain committed both to world-class research and a high quality of life. In fact, 91 percent of our seniors say they’d pick Clemson again if they had it to do over.

Clemson’s retention and graduation rates rank among the highest in the country for public universities. We’ve been named among the best values by  Kiplinger  magazine in 2013, and SmartMoney  in 2012 ranked us No. 7 in student return on investment.

Our beautiful college campus sits on 1,400 acres in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, along the shores of Hartwell Lake. But we also have research facilities and economic development hubs throughout the state of South Carolina — in Greenville, Greenwood, Columbia and Charleston.

The Department of Biological Sciences at Clemson University and the Eukaryotic Pathogens Innovation Center (EPIC) invite applications for a tenure-track ASSISTANT PROFESSOR position, to be filled by an innovative scholar whose research is in an area that complements our current department and center strengths. Clemson University, the College of Science, the Department of Biological Sciences, and EPIC, are committed to building a community of inclusive excellence and creating a sense of belonging, where faculty scholars are dedicated to working and teaching in a welcoming environment that empowers students to be positive change agents. Review will continue until the position is filled. The anticipated start-date is August 2025.

We seek a candidate who will build a research program centered on parasitic and/or fungal diseases, including, but not limited to, mechanistic aspects of pathogen biology, pathogen-host or pathogen-vector interactions, evolution and ecology of infectious disease, drug-delivery, or translational research on communicable diseases caused by eukaryotic pathogens. Applicants who leverage cutting-edge techniques to address questions about host immunity are highly encouraged to apply.

About the Center, Department and University

EPIC (https://scienceweb.clemson.edu/epic/) is an interdisciplinary research cooperative at Clemson. It stands at the forefront of biomedical research on eukaryotic pathogens, which are the causative agents of some of the most devastating and intractable diseases of humans including amoebic dysentery, sleeping sickness, toxoplasmosis, amebic meningoencephalitis, fungal meningitis, among others. The center is supported by a NIH Center of Biomedical Research Excellence Award (Phase 1 complete, currently in Phase 2). The Center provides a first-rate environment for engaging students and colleagues in collaborative research.

The Dept. of Biological Sciences (http://www.clemson.edu/biosci/) boasts a talented group of ~50 faculty members who are recognized for research in ecology, evolution and organismal biology, microbiology, molecular, cellular and developmental biology, toxicology and pedagogy and instructional biology. We expect the candidate to bring high-impact research programs to Clemson while contributing to existing research strengths in both EPIC and the Department of Biological Sciences

Located on Lake Hartwell in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Clemson University is South Carolina’s public land-grant University. As a Carnegie R1 Institution, the University has excellent research resources including the globally ranked Palmetto high performance computing cluster, and state-of-the-art microscopy, genomics and bioinformatics facilities. There are many opportunities for collaboration across a wide group of partners on and off campus, including faculty in other departments in the College of Science and those in other colleges including the College of Agriculture, Forestry, and Life Sciences, the College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences, and the new College of Veterinary Medicine.
