DEPARTMENT CHAIR - ENGINEERING AND SCIENCE EDUCATION (ESED)
Clemson, SCOne of the country’s most selective public research universities, Clemson University serves a uniquely driven and highly accomplished student body.
Ranked consistently as one of the best national public university by U.S.News & World Report, Clemson is a science- and engineering-oriented college dedicated to teaching, research and service. Founded in 1889, we remain committed both to world-class research and a high quality of life. In fact, 91 percent of our seniors say they’d pick Clemson again if they had it to do over.
Clemson’s retention and graduation rates rank among the highest in the country for public universities. We’ve been named among the best values by Kiplinger magazine in 2013, and SmartMoney in 2012 ranked us No. 7 in student return on investment.
Our beautiful college campus sits on 1,400 acres in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, along the shores of Hartwell Lake. But we also have research facilities and economic development hubs throughout the state of South Carolina — in Greenville, Greenwood, Columbia and Charleston.
Department Chair, Engineering and Science Education, Clemson University
Clemson University invites applications for the position of Department Chair in the Department of Engineering and Science Education (ESED). The anticipated start date for this role is January 2025.
About Engineering and Science Education at Clemson University:
Located within the College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences (CECAS), ESED conducts and advances research in all science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines, translates research to evidence-based practice, and prepares leaders who will act as catalysts for change. We are committed to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment where collaboration and creativity thrive. ESED faculty have established strong research programs via external funding (including multiple NSF CAREER awards), peer-reviewed scholarly work, national and international collaborations, and mentoring undergraduate and graduate researchers. The ESED department is focused on graduate student education through a student-centered approach to courses and professional development activities, offering a Ph.D. in Engineering and Science Education and a certificate for Ph.D. students in STEM majors across colleges. Since the department was established in 2006, graduates from the Ph.D. and certificate programs have taken positions at research-intensive and teaching-focused academic institutions as well as positions in industry, government, and non-profit organizations. There are six research-active faculty members, two faculty with administrative appointments, four postdoctoral research fellows, two staff members, and 24 graduate students in the ESED department, which is poised to grow through joint appointment hires with other STEM departments.
Responsibilities:
The successful department chair will be expected to provide strategic leadership to strengthen the existing reputation of the ESED department within the local and national arenas. They will build on the culture of inclusion, belonging, and respect for all members of the ESED department, and advocate for resources and support for its growth. They will also teach at the graduate level and conduct research at a level commensurate with the expected administrative duties.
