JOB SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Biosafety Officer, assists in the development and implementation of the Clemson University Biosafety Program. Provides comprehensive health and safety program support and services. Job duties may include reviewing protocols, consulting with labs on biosafety controls and conducting inspections, risk assessments, and training. Acts in the absence of the Biosafety Officer and performs other duties as assigned.
JOB DUTIES:
25% - Essential - Lab inspection and Monitoring
Assists with inspections of laboratories for compliance with general lab safety, biosafety, and biosecurity regulations, and controlled substances. Conducts post-approval monitoring of laboratories falling within the purview of the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC). Cites deficiencies and assists in developing corrective action plans. Helps to oversee the Biosafety Cabinet inventory and certifications. Monitors State and Federal Regulations for compliance. Plays a role with coordinating research safety/field safety/occupational safety and health program for animal users for compliance with AAALAC requirements.
20% - Essential - Biosafety Committee Participation and Reporting
Serves as back up to the Biosafety Officer as a voting member of the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) and a non-voting member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). Provides technical expertise in the review and approval of protocols. Reports to the IBC any significant problems, non-compliance issues, violations of the National Institute of Health (NIH) Guidelines, and any significant research-related accidents or illnesses.
25% - Essential - Training and Safe Handling
Helps to develop and implement training for safe handling, use, transportation, and disposal of biohazardous materials and recombinant DNA. Supports the Bloodborne Pathogen program including developing and providing BBP training. Helps to develop and implement Laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and checks for compliance. Coordinates with the Biosafety Officer, Emergency Response Teams, and other OES staff members on biosafety and lab safety issues. Monitors State and Federal regulations to ensure compliance. Reviews construction and renovation plans related to biosafety issues. Helps to maintain reference documents such as the Exposure Control Plan and the Biosafety Manual.
25% - Essential - Regulation Guideline Assistance
Assist researchers in complying with regulations, guidelines, polices, and directives governing research and teaching activities involving recombinant DNA molecules, infectious and pathogenic agents, other biological agents and toxins. Reviews and responds to lab safety incidents and accidents and documents findings and correction action in Incident Reports. Provides guidance to researchers based on reviews and investigations. Supports the Controlled Substances Program on campus
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education - High School or Equivalent and experience with biosafety programs. A bachelor's degree in science or engineering may be substituted for work experience.
Work Exp 1+ years lab work or safety related experienced
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:
Education - 1st Bachelor's Degree in science or engineering with research experience or course work in genetics, biochemistry, microbiology, and chemistry.
Preferred education area: Genetics, Molecular Biology, Biology, or Microbiology
Work Exp 2-5 years experience working with pathogenic organisms, rDNA work, animal research, or plant research. Biosafety experience in an academic or research environment.

COMPENSATION INFORMATION
Anticipated Salary Range ($ 52,100.00 - $ 60,000.00)
Salary is dependent upon several factors including, but not limited to, a candidate's previous experience, knowledge, skills and performance in accordance with Clemson's compensation guidelines.
ESSENTIAL PERSONNEL LEVEL
Normal Operations
Required to follow emergency facility closure directives, and not normally expected work on-site during emergency situations.
